Sapium

This deciduous, tropical tree is a native of Japan and China. S. sebiferum, commonly known as the Chinese Tallow Tree, Popcorn Tree and Vegetable Tallow, is a quick growing tree that is naturalized and widely grown for ornament and shade in tropical climates. The Chinese Tallow Tree grows 35 to 40 feet high. It is clothed with glossy light green, oval, pointy-tipped leaves that tremble in the breeze. They grow from 1 to 3 inches in length and are quite pest-free. The foliage turns dark red, orange, yellow or purplish in the autumn before falling off. In the spring, this tree bears small, yellow catkins, which are followed by hard, -inch, 3-lobed capsules. When the capsules split open, decorative waxy, white seeds are revealed, which resemble popcorn kernels. The waxy coating that covers the seeds is used, in China, to make soap and candles.

Pot Cultivation

The Chinese Tallow Tree can be grown in tropical climates only. It needs full sun and can be grown in almost any soil. Young trees can be pruned in the winter; old trees hardly ever need pruning.
